Praying The Psalms

 Wisdom     Psalm 1:1-3

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,

Nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful;

But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.

He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water,

That brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither;

And whatever he does shall prosper.

Asking God For Help      Psalm 5:1-3,11

Listen to my words, Lord, consider my lament.

Hear my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray.

In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice;

in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.

But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You;

Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them;

Let those also who love Your name Be joyful in You.

For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous;

With favor You will surround him as with a shield.

 Penitential Psalm     Psalm  6

O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your anger, Nor chasten me in Your hot displeasure.

Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak; O Lord, heal me, for my bones are troubled.

My soul also is greatly troubled; But You, O Lord-how long?

Return, O Lord, deliver me! Oh, save me for Your mercies' sake!

For in death there is no remembrance of You; In the grave who will give You thanks?

I am weary with my groaning; All night I make my bed swim;

I drench my couch with my tears. My eye wastes away because of grief;

It grows old because of all my enemies. Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity;

For the Lord has heard the voice of my weeping. The Lord has heard my supplication;

The Lord will receive my prayer. Let all my enemies be ashamed and greatly troubled.

Let them turn back and be ashamed suddenly.

Praising God     Psalm 8

O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens!

Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength,

Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,

What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?

For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor.

You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands;

You have put all things under his feet, All sheep and oxen –

Even the beasts of the field, The birds of the air, And the fish of the sea

That pass through the paths of the seas. O Lord, our Lord,

How excellent is Your name in all the earth

Praising God     Psalm 9:1-2

I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works.

I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.

Asking God For Help     Psalm 13

How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?

How long shall I take counsel in my soul, Having sorrow in my heart daily?

How long will my enemy be exalted over me?

Consider and hear me, O Lord my God;

Enlighten my eyes, Lest I sleep the sleep of death;

Lest my enemy say, "I have prevailed against him";

Lest those who trouble me rejoice when I am moved.

But I have trusted in Your mercy;

My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.

I will sing to the Lord, Because He has dealt bountifully with me.

 Trusting in God     Psalm 16:1-2

Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust.

O my soul, you have said to the Lord, "You are my Lord,

My goodness is nothing apart from You."

Asking God For Help     Psalm 17:6

I call on you, my God, for you will answer me; turn your ear to me and hear my prayer.

Trusting In God     Psalm 18:1-6

I will love You, O Lord, my strength.

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;

My God, my strength, in whom I will trust;

My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised;

So shall I be saved from my enemies.

The pangs of death surrounded me,

And the floods of ungodliness made me afraid.

The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me;

The snares of death confronted me.

In my distress I called upon the Lord, And cried out to my God;

He heard my voice from His temple,

And my cry came before Him, even to His ears.

Trusting In God     Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures,

he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.

He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley,I will fear no evil, for you are with me;

your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Trusting In God    Psalm 27:1

The Lord is my light and my salvation-whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the stronghold of my life-of whom shall I be afraid?

Asking God For Help     Psalm 31:1-5

In you, Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness.

Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me.

Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me.

Keep me free from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge.

Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, Lord, my faithful God.

Penitential Psalm        Psalm  32

Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered.

Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity,

And in whose spirit there is no deceit.

When I kept silent, my bones grew old Through my groaning all the day long.

For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me;

My vitality was turned into the drought of summer.

I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I have not hidden.

I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,"

And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

For this cause everyone who is godly shall pray to You

In a time when You may be found; Surely in a flood of great waters

They shall not come near him. You are my hiding place;

You shall preserve me from trouble;

You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;

I will guide you with My eye. Do not be like the horse or like the mule,

Which have no understanding, Which must be harnessed with bit and bridle,

Else they will not come near you. Many sorrows shall be to the wicked;

But he who trusts in the Lord, mercy shall surround him.

Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous; And shout for joy, all you upright in

Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.

Asking God For Help     Psalm 86:1-12

Hear me, Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy.

Guard my life, for I am faithful to you; save your servant who trusts in you.

You are my God; have mercy on me, Lord, for I call to you all day long.

Bring joy to your servant, Lord, for I put my trust in you.

You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you.

Hear my prayer, Lord; listen to my cry for mercy. Among the gods there is none like you, Lord;

no deeds can compare with yours. All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, Lord;

they will bring glory to your name.For you are great and do marvelous deeds; for you alone are God.

Teach me your way, Lord, I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart;

I will glorify your name forever.

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.

Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord

is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Asking God For Help     Psalm 102:1-2. (Penitential)

Praise The Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits,

who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,

who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,

who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

Asking God For Help      Psalm 121:1-8

I lift up my eyes to the mountains - where does my help come from?

My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip - he who watches over you will not slumber;

Indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over your, the Lord is your shade at your right hand;

The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm - he will watch over your life;

The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

Asking God For Help     Psalm 130:1-6. (Penitential)

Out of the depths I have cried to You, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice!

Let Your ears be attentive To the voice of my supplications.

If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?

But there is forgiveness with You, That You may be feared.

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, And in His word I do hope.

My soul waits for the Lord More than those who watch for the morning.

Yes, more than those who watch for the morning.

Praising God     Psalm 136:1-3

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.

Oh, give thanks to the God of gods! For His mercy endures forever.

Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords! For His mercy endures forever.

Wisdom    Psalm 139:1-10

O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up;

You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down,

And are acquainted with all my ways.

For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.

You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it.

Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?

If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.

If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.

Asking God For Help     Psalm 141:1-3

Lord, I cry out to You; Make haste to me!

Give ear to my voice when I cry out to You.

Let my prayer be set before You as incense,

The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.

Penitential Psalm     Psalm 143 (Penitential)

Hear my prayer, O Lord, Give ear to my supplications!

In Your faithfulness answer me, And in Your righteousness,

Do not enter into judgment with Your servant,

For in Your sight no one living is righteous.

For the enemy has persecuted my soul; He has crushed my life to the ground;

He has made me dwell in darkness, Like those who have long been dead.

I meditate on all Your works; I muse on the work of Your hands.

I spread out my hands to You; My soul longs for You like a thirsty land.

Answer me speedily, O Lord; My spirit fails!

Do not hide Your face from me, Lest I be like those who go down into the pit.

Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, For in You do I trust;

Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You

Praising God     Psalm 150

Praise the Lord! Praise God in His sanctuary;

Praise Him in His mighty firmament! Praise Him for His mighty acts;

Praise Him according to His excellent greatness! Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;

Praise Him with the lute and harp! Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;

Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes! Praise Him with loud cymbals;

Praise Him with clashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord!
